WHSmith is a leading global retailer with a presence in over 25 countries, serving its customers from over 1,300 stores across the globe. With such an extensive presence worldwide, WHSmith was proud to open its first store in Australia back in 2010. The first store opened its doors in 2010 in Melbourne Airport and within a short period of time, the business has grown substantially – and it continues to grow – with stores now open in Sydney, Adelaide and Perth. To date, we have over 50 stores operating in Australia and over 500 employees.
Our goal is to be the leading retailer in convenience, books and news for the world’s travelling customer. We understand our customers and know that in the locations in which we operate people have less time to browse. We understand they need their purchase to be quick, and our one-stop-shop solution for food, drink, confectionery and digital and travel accessories, combined with our focus on instore design and excellent customer service reflects this.
Roll on two years since the first WHSmith opened in Australia and in early 2012 the business acquired the brand Fresh+ – a hospital café business, serving fresh food and refreshments to visitors and patients. Next came Zoodle, the happy travel store tailored for the younger traveller that stocks games, toys and all things fun!
In 2014, the business moved into the franchise world with Wild Cards & Gifts, and acquired Kenny’s Cardiology shortly after. Expanding into newsagencies was a natural next step, so next came Supanews to our growing business.
In 2015, we launched a brand new travel store at Sydney Airport, and opened a further five new concept stores that are even bigger and better with a broader range of products for people on the move. As we have continued to grow the business, innovation has been at the heart of everything we do. We have leapt into the world of technology and digital accessories and we now have GadgetShop branded stores in both Brisbane and Perth Airports. And so, it goes on. We move at the same pace as our customers, always ensuring they are at the forefront of everything we do.
