The Late Show
Renee Ballard had a burgeoning career as a detective with the LAPD, but after filing a sexual harassment complaint against a supervisor, she was given the night shift as punishment.
However, following the beating of a prostitute in a parking lot and the killing of a young woman in a nightclub shooting, Ballard struggles to hand over the cases to day-shift detectives. Against orders and her own partner’s wishes, she works both cases by day while maintaining her shift by night.
As the cases become increasingly entangled, Ballard is drawn in closer to her own demons and the reason she won’t give up her job.
Stephen Loosley from Weekend Australian commended Connelly’s ability to paint ‘LA…as a constantly shifting character’. Kirkus praised Connelly’s ability to ‘find the soul in the smallest procedural details’, while Oline Cogdill and Janet Maslin both admired Connelly’s decision to launch a new series with a strong female lead.
